Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

I am indeed sorry to be the cause of so much trouble, and I can well understand that you must be feeling very disappointed, if not a little annoyed, that your article should have gone to press including my paper in its uncorrected state. I had hoped from reading your letter to Mr. Ashmole that there was still time to make these textual changes, but I see that I was mistaken. Under the circumstances, the best I can do is to stand the cost of the revised off-prints and I shall be glad if you will kindly let me have the estimate as soon as possible. In the interests of truth, would it not be possible to publish the revised version in the following edition of Enkomi with, perhaps, a short note explaining the circumstances that obliged me to re-examine the cup and change my opinion? As far as I am concerned, I don't in the slightest mind admitting my volte-face: new knowledge has come to light and all that matters, in the interests of science, is that it should be made known.

Kindly let me know your views about this, and also if you are agreeable to my elaborating the notes I sent you on niello for a scientific publication. You made no mention of this in your letter.

I have passed on your cheques to Mr. Bell and to the Accountant, and am enclosing Mr. Bell's receipt herewith.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,
