About the discoveries at Enkomi in Cyprus.

The Director of the French Archaeological Mission, Mr Cl. F.A. Schaeffer has just arrived from Cyprus at the Institut French Institute of Archaeology in Beirut, accompanied by his assistants MM. Frizin and Porter, for first contact with the Services des Antiquités of Lebanon at Beirut, and of Syria at Damascus. It is confirmed that the French Archaeological Mission has indeed discovered at Enkomi near Famagusta the site of the capital of the Island in the 13th century before our era, called then Alasia, i.e. the city of Copper. Its existence was known from Egyptian documents of the time of Thutmose. However three successive archaeological missions had vainly sought to find again in Cyprus this very important historic city. The French Archaeological Mission has uncovered not far from a superb building which is probably the palace of Alasia, of great funerary vaults of the XVme century B.C., one of which belonged to a princely family and contained numerous and very fine gold jewellery. A fine statue depicting a deity Egyptian in bronze inlaid with gold has also been discovered. The Mission will shortly resume its archaeological research in Syria to complete a work in preparation on Ras Shamra - Ugarit.
