About the Discoveries at Enkomi in Cyprus.

The Director of the French Archaeological Mission, Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer, has just arrived from Cyprus at the Institut Français d'Archéologie de Beyrouth, accompanied by his assistants MM. Pironin and Forrer, to make contact with the Services des Antiquités du Liban in Beirut, and of Syria in Damascus.

It is confirmed that the French Archaeological Mission has indeed discovered at Enkomi near Famagusta, the site of the capital of the island in the 2nd millennium before our era, called then Alasia, i.e. the city of Copper. Its existence was known from Egyptian documents of the time of Tutankhamun. However, three successive archaeological missions had vainly sought to recover in Cyprus this very important historic city.

The French Archaeological Mission uncovered not far from a superb building which is probably the palace of Alasia, of large burial chambers of the 15th century B.C., one of which belonged to a princely family and contained numerous and very fine gold jewellery. A fine statue depicting a deity Egyptian in bronze inlaid with gold has also been discovered.

The Mission will shortly resume its archaeological research in Syria to complete a work in preparation on Ras Shamra - Ugarit.
