2.

The material submitted contained no metal at all. It had the appearance of a copper oxide with a little clay We think the composition of the metal should be approximately:

Tin ............ 3,90 Lead ............ I,50 Copper ........... 77,20 Iron .............. I7,40

It is possible that part of the iron comes from the clay.

Sample no. 3.- Vounois (Cyprus) - Flat axe from tomb 64 no. I64 - Material sent: 0 gr,600.

Silica ........... I,80 Tin oxide .... I,00 Lead oxide ... I,00 Copper oxide .. 58,60 Iron oxide ..... 2,00 Lime oxide ... 0 Magnesia oxide. 0 Nickel oxide... 0 Sulphuric anhydride:traces Loss on ignition ..... 35,65

The material submitted contained no traces of metal. It had the appearance of a carbonated copper oxide. From the analysis of this oxide one can roughly deduce the following analysis for the composition of the metal:

Tin ............ I,72 Lead ............ I,48 Copper .......... 93,50 Iron .............. 3,30 Zinc ............. 0 Nickel ........... 0 Sulphur ........... traces

I certainly cannot guarantee any of these figures, given the small weight of the materials entering the analysis which contained no metallic particle. It is probably that for sample no. I you have collected only the clay soiling a little the oxide of the metal of the object.

I remain at your disposal for complementary analysis if you can procure me more abundant.
