DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, NICOSIA.

22nd September, 1954

Dear Miller,

You will perhaps have heard how spoil from the excavations of the French Mission and of this Department at Enkomi was used to form the embankment on the new road diversion. Your people were glad to have this conveniently placed supply of soil and we were glad to have it removed.

On a visit last week to the excavations of the French Mission, which have just been resumed, I was shown a number of trenches where the machine employed to remove the soil on either side has unintentionally filled a good deal back into the trenches. This is involving the French Mission in the extra expense of digging it out again and I understand the Director Dr. C.F.A.Schaeffer will be approaching you about this. I have informed him that it would probably be difficult to secure any cash compensation or to arrange for the P.W.D. to re-excavate the trenches. There is the possibility that your people may need soil for embanking some other, more distant, part of the road, which they would normally obtain elsewhere, but which in the special circumstances you might agree to their taking from the French excavations. Perhaps you would consider this.

There will in point of fact be a steady supply of spoil from the French and our own excavations upto the end of November.

Yours sincerely,

(Sgd) A.H.S. MEGAW

J.P.Miller Esq., Divisional Engineer, P.W.D., Famagusta.
