17th September, 1954

Handwritten: Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

You will remember that at the conclusion of your last campaign we settled on your behalf some minor claims for compensation. I think only two claims are outstanding:

(1) that of a certain CLEOPAS from Famagusta into whose field the clearance of the southwest sector of the town wall caused an encroachment. At this point we are proposing to divert the track to run outside the line of the wall and to acquire that part of his property which is affected. The matter is in the hands of the Lands and Surveys Department and I therefore suggest that, if he approaches you, you refer him to me.

(2) That of THOUKIDIDES B. MICHANIKOS of Lymnia who is, or was[handwritten: +] the proprietor of the low-lying field to the north of the site where the new road has now been made, and where in one of your early campaigns earth was dumped with his consent. During your last campaign he came to complain to you that the dumped earth had not been levelled and contained stones which has prevented him cultivating the field. You referred him to us. We tried to come to an agreement with him on the basis that he would be compensated with a small sum of £2-£3 based on the cost of levelling and removing stone. But he did not accept and asked £40, based on the profits he would have made from the crops he alleges he was unable to sow. We explained that we only had your authority to settle small claims for compensation and that the matter would have to await your return. I suggest that if he approaches you should try to settle for £4 or £5 maximum. Failing that the matter will have to be referred to the Commissioner of Famagusta for decision.

Handwritten: Yours sincerely,
