Famagusta, 29th November 1947.

Dear friend,

I thank you for having sent me the credit for excavations at Enkomi, which arrived just in time to avoid an interruption of the work, though indispensable in the interval, thanks to an advance from Mr [illegible].

We have had a very fruitful campaign, having uncovered the South enclosure of the town, a remarkable structure with masonry of cyclopean type, with square towers and walls 5m thick. In the North part we have discovered a new quarter of the town much better preserved, which allows us to study the organisation of an urban centre of an early period. In a hiding place made in a wall we found a very fine hoard of bronzes, which completes our knowledge of the weapons and tools of the middle of the 2nd millennium.

The weather is still favourable and the few showers have hardly hindered our work. We shall be able to continue until the middle of December and I hope to be able to remain on the mission at that time. Successes for us are unfortunately rare, owing to the delay of all the work in consequence of the strikes and all the other present difficulties.

I hope that next year we shall have the pleasure of seeing you again. Please present to Mrs MacAgutte my respectful regards, and believe, my dear friend, in the assurance of my best sentiments.
