Dear Dr Schaeffer,

Thank you for your letters from Arslan Tépé and Beyrouth. I note that we should expect £500 in due course from M. Lapierre for credit of your account in our Antiquities Fund and in the meantime £60 to cover Coche's expenses. We look forward to seeing him on the 4th and hope you and Mme Schaeffer will also be revisiting Cyprus shortly.

Dikaios is back now but I have decided not to ask him to start excavating at Engomi until we know your plans. If you are able to resume your work at Ras Shamra and foresee that you will not be able to excavate at Engomi this autumn, then I think Dikaios should take the opportunity to start work in the area adjoining your first trench on which we agreed. We have money and there is at present no sign of rain.

The acquisition of the plots is proceeding but can only be completed when your funds arrive. The attached sketch map illustrates the position. I have authorised the Commissioner to lease for cultivation the areas hatched blue as soon as they are acquired, as I foresee they will not be affected by the coming season's excavations. I hope you agree; I could not delay instructions about this until your arrival as the sowing season has now arrived.

Yours sincerely,
