20 March 1948

Dear Mr Consul,

I have received your letter of 16 January and am glad that your pupils have kept a good memory of the visit they made under your direction to our excavations at Enkomi.

Barclay's Bank has notified me of the transfer of L 138/6/6 that you kindly made to my account, and I thank you for it. This transfer corresponds to the grant of 1.400 pounds that the Commission des Fouilles of the Direction Générale des Relations Culturelles, Ministère des Affaires Etrangères, allocated to me for research at Enkomi from the 1948 excavation budget.

As a result of budget cuts, the grant, like that of all other missions, has had to be considerably reduced.

This year's grant will be used in part for preparing the publication of our excavations of 1946 to 1947 and for the indispensable purchases of land, in which the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus takes part for half. Nevertheless, I hope to be able to make a short excavation campaign this autumn, notably to complete the clearing of the very fine building that yielded us the small treasure of bronze objects. I therefore hope to see you again and look forward to it.

Please believe, dear Mr Consul, in the expression of my devoted sentiments.

Mr J. Lapierre, Consul of France at Larnaca, Cyprus. Island of Cyprus.
