6. I have not yet had time to study the horned statue. But my first impression is that it is a typical Cyprus product, exceptionnal for its size. Certainly, there is syrian influence in it, but I don't know if it can be called a Baal. I would like to know the shape of the harpé and also better recognize the attitude of the right hand. Is the left hand pierced? There are other horned gods beside Baal and a god alasiotas influenced by syrian art is not excluded. Date: it cannot be older than XIVth c. B.C. but is probably younger.
Contrary to my expectation, the style does not allow an easy dating, for it is in many ways unique. The archeological context will help and we have to wait what Dikaios has to say about it.
Where are you dumping the earth of your excavation?
7. House to be built: if the building is used to house a fulltime watchman (of course with wife, children, chickens, pigs and fleas) it will be of no use to us as a dig house later. Therefore I would propose that you build a little Cyprus mudbricks house on the edge of the rocky crag overlooking the whole site for the guard with an open shelter for the workmen in case of rain. And that we prepare for Dikaios and us a small dighouse and first aid atelier a good distance away from the guards house. I would suggest to build this dighouse on the site, one one of the places where the rock is near the surface and already ladd bare (on the west of our excavation of the Maison des Bronzes for instance). For such a dig house as shown on your plan, I would offer to contribute a 100 pounds share; for the separate guard's house I would propose to contribute 50 pounds.
8. It would be useful to choose the guard not among Georgios' numerous old friends of Enkomi, but a promising young foreman who could be formed to become a successor useful to us. Good Georgios has contributed to my 1947 workmen mostly senond rate old men or women and he made difficulties when we wanted to send them back or replace them.
Yours sincerely,
5. The Secretaire Perpetuel has asked me to prepare Dikaios' report and mine for the Academy for April 1st. Length of Dikaios contribution: 10 minutes speaking time. Enlarged photographs and plans to be shown, which could if he wishes, be reused for the article in the Ill.L.News.
I hope the bad weather is over in Cyprus. Here spring weather is coming in and I hope that the cold is definitely over.
