Dr. C.F.A.Schaeffer, M.A.D. Litt., St.Germain-en-Laye (S.et O.) France.
This is to let you know that we have now despatched by air mail the following contributions for Enkomi I:
Packet No.1 containing the text of Mitsos' chapters and the detailed descriptions of the pottery shown on plates XXV-XXIX, each of which we would like opposite the plate to which it refers, on the verso of the preceding plate. (I suggest these descriptions be set up in smaller type than the text, in two columns.)
Packet No.2 containing photographs for plates VIII-LXXV packed up with titled [illegible].
We have also despatched by surface mail:
Packet No.3 containing a second copy, as requested, of the text of Mitsos chapters and of the descriptions for the pottery (i.e. a duplicate of packet 1).
It remains for us to despatch the following which are not quite in final order:
Packet No.4 containing the drawings which are to be reproduced as plates I-VIII and text figures 1-5.
Packet No.5 containing typescript of an appendix to Mitsos' report giving tabular statistics of pottery types found in the various rooms.
I am afraid that the retyping of the contributions after I had been through them has taken longer than I anticipated, but I hope they will reach you very soon after your return from America.
I look forward to hearing details of the financial arrangements you are able to make for Enkomi I including an estimate of what it will fall to us to pay. If the publisher, like the Oxford Press, demands payment of the full cost in the first instance we would be particularly interested to know what are the prospects of income from sales. As you know, the Cyprus Government has limited its net commitments on publication (on all volumes of "Enkomi") after receipts from sales are accounted for, to £300. It will certainly be necessary, if part of our subsidy for Enkomi I can be postponed until 1953, as you suggest, for we have to pay heavy bills from Oxford for "Kkhrokitia" this year.
The two little rooms have now been added to the dig-house. The contractor, who turned out to be a rotter, has run us into some extra expenses but I think we shall not have to pay more than about £5 each over and above our previous contributions.
Mitsos moves in to resume work on his building about the middle of June (the midges are still awful!). The prospects of interesting earlier remains underneath it seem poor if the Byzantine-Lusignan from the 13th century pit are an indication. We also hope, as arranged, to tackle a section of the north wall of the town. I shall let you know how things go.
In conclusion, my thanks for your last letter of 15th April, and I hope you may soon have a long and most enjoyable visit ...
