3 or 4 specialists for the clearing of the tombs and the reconstruction and preparation of the finds. Mr P. Dikaios, my former collaborator at Vounous, would be appointed deputy director under my orders and would direct the excavations during my absence. The financial management of each mission belongs to him. The excavation equipment, including the discoveries, will be supplied by the Antiquities Service, which would take charge of guarding the site. The Antiquities Service would consider its contribution to the Enkomi excavations as the main objective of its excavation department over the next 5 or 6 years. The division of the finds would be equal. The Antiquities Service would contribute to the printing costs of the definitive publication, which will be in French and printed in France.
Our present excavation campaign will end on 12 October. Then MM Coache and Pyironin will take care of the packing and transport while I go to Palestine to visit the excavations at Fara and to Syria to study the resumption of the excavations at Ras Shamra.
In this connection, I have just been informed by our ambassador at Damascus of the intention of the Syrian government (in agreement with the other Arab governments) to prohibit all archaeological excavations for the duration of one year. As the Syrian government gave me a promise before my departure, I shall try to obtain a concession to continue the work of developing the camp and the site in progress.
I will keep you informed of the reception I meet with in Damascus.
The activity of the French Archaeological Mission is often mentioned in the press. Here are 6 clippings from the Turkish, Greek and English press.
