5 or 4 specialists for the clearing of the tombs and the reconstruction and preparation of the finds. Mr P.Dikaios, my former collaborator of Vounous would be appointed deputy director under my orders and would direct the excavations during my absence. The financial management of each mission belongs to it. The excavation equipment, including the clearing by hand, is supplied by the Antiquities Service, which would take charge of the guarding of the site. The Antiquities Service would consider its contribution to the excavations of Enkomi as the main objective of its excavation department during the next 5 or 6 years. The produce of the excavations would be shared equally. The Antiquities Service would contribute to the printing costs of the publication definitive, which will be in French and printed in France.
Our current excavation campaign will end on 12 October. Then MM Cosmo and Pirroni will take care of the packing and transport, while I will go to Palestine to visit the excavations of Ras and to Syria to study the resumption of the excavations at Ras Shamra.
In this connection I have just been informed by our ambassador at Damascus of the intention of the Syrian government (in agreement with the other governments of the Arab states) to prohibit all archaeological excavations during the period of one year. As the Syrian government gave me before my departure a promise, I will try to obtain a concession to continue the works for the development of the camp and of the site in progress. I am going to telegraph about the contract of the agreement that I will recognise in Damascus.
