Stone seal with representation of Philistine warrior (Inv. 184 on Pl. XLII, 2,4 and LXXV, 5).
This important seal, which comes from the fill under floor III in room X+IX, is of black stone and measures 1,5 cms in height and 1,6 cms across. It is rather hemisphercal in form, it is pierced for suspension and the seal face is oval.
The latter is engraved with a representation of a Philistine warrior holding a round shield behind which he shelters. The warrior is bearded and wears the feathered headdress known from other representations of such warriors (1) including the Philistine on the ivory draughts box from Enkomi (2) where he is also bearded. Behind the shield we see the left arm of the warrior and below it his two legs, which, in contrast to the powerful and careful rendering of the arm, are thin and out
(1). Cf. Hall, Civilazation of Greece in the Bronze Age p. 242, Fig. 320. On the origin of this headdress see R. D. Barnett in PEQ 1939, 12 (2). Murray and others, Excavations in Cyprus, Pl. I (top figure).
