… this course we started uncovering a fourth course of dressed blocks but here (floor IV) the work stopped(1) The total height uncovered is 1.57 m. Above the uppermost dressed blocks the wall is built of mudbricks with lime plastering on either side.
The upper part of the stone wall is built of thin slabs placed back to back with a narrow space 8-10 cms. in width, between them. We shall see that in the case of the eastern wall of this part of the room (wall 12) horizontal slabs were placed on top of the vertical ones thus keeping the latter in position and also closing the empty space between them. In the present case however such horizontal slabs do not exist, but it is possible that originally they did and were later damaged and removed without being replaced in the subsequent reconstruction. The dimensions of the slabs used in the upper part of the stone wall vary in the two faces. Thus the north face (the inner) is built of slabs of smaller height, actually in two courses / but
(1) A small trial here later revealed that this wall is built of dressed or half-dressed blocks down to its base which rests on a floor (VII) overlying the bedrock (supra p. and Pl.XX.3).
