16th August, 1951

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

As already indicated, our campaign for this year has now closed. In the end the chief scene of activity was again the temple area. The area we planned to dig against the north wall remains at the topmost level, but outside the wall the foundation course of a very large tower has been uncovered at the point where we stopped work last year. There have been no outstanding finds.

It will be a matter for discussion with you on the site how far further work is necessary on any of these sites to enable us to discharge the responsibilities we have undertaken, only in the light of that discussion could I propose (as you invite me to do) the date from which our collaboration is to be terminated. I shall also, as you suggest, have to consult the Colonial Secretary, whom I have already asked for funds for next year. May I say in conclusion that I much appreciate your desire to avoid any embarrassment to my Department in terminating our partnership.

I enclose a renewal of your licence for the maximum period of two years as requested. The previous licence which this renews makes reference to our agreement, consequently if the closing date fixed for the joint expedition is before 8th August 1953, some amendment will be required.

Yours sincerely,
