Students query LSE policy on investments BY OUR OWN REPORTER Lord Robbins, the chairman of the court of governors of the London School of Economics, yesterday told a crowded meeting of students that it would be silly to sell the school's South African investments indiscriminately. After pointing out that students could make suggestions on investment policy through the court of governors, Lord Robbins said: "If you advise them to sell all South African investments, I shall advise against it." The meeting, called to strengthen support on a ban on firms in Rhodesia and South Africa from recruiting LSE students, first had an eight-minute question and answer with Lord Robbins. He generally had a good hearing and was often applauded—but not so enthusiastcaly as some of his aggressive questioners. At the end, he said he would not thank the students for a quiet hearing, but he felt conditions could have been much worse. In a short opening speech, he said he wanted to see the traditional happy spirit restored at the school, but he was deeply resentful of the "character assassination" of members of the staff and the court of governors in pamphlets circulated by students.
