One must not, however, be misled sig into thinking that this plan was drawn before the excavation. The area was rather covered by an even crust of hard white lime-earth, which was exposed immediately below the surface layer. The situation was broadly similar to that which prevailed at the proskenion in the theatre at Soli. The lime crust was, however, broken through and the stones underlying it were cleared. In doing so the two main passages b and later a were found, running from outside straight in the direction of the wall towards rooms 7 and 10. b is considerably broader than a and in the fill from here, in addition to a quantity of pottery, a number of profiled moulding stones of the same type as previously observed at least from room 10 were found. Towards room 10 the passage b ends at a low rock barrier. Immediately above this rock barrier lie some larger apparently profiled gypsum pieces, with the profiling in all cases facing downwards.
