Limestone Cypro-Greek II, fragment (K. 138)

Limestone head fragment from Kition, front view against a plain grey background — Photograph: Swedish Cyprus Expedition, 1927–31. Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, C02930b. Public domain (CC0).

Description

A carved head in pale grey limestone is shown from the front on a plain grey backdrop, with its broken neck resting on a blue and white putty support. Curled hair frames the face, and a band or headdress runs across the top of the head. The almond-shaped eyes and small mouth are clearly modelled, while the nose is chipped and the surface is pitted and worn.
