Terracotta head of the Great Goddess with calathos, Sanctuary

Head with an open calathos, of the Great Goddess type, with a head covering; coarse workmanship, H. 5.1 cm. The round face has a receding forehead, a flattened ridge nose continuing the line of the forehead, and globular eyes in relief (perhaps applied pastilles); there is no chin, and the hair is drawn back at the sides in incised locks. The head is incomplete, lacking the neck and the back, with a sort of coil in the middle; the calathos has a concave base and an indistinct lower edge, and perhaps traces of earring blanks. Heavily worn; pinkish chamois fabric, hollow-moulded. Inventory Tc_1717; 1 May 1969.
