Terracotta fragment of a deer held by a goddess, Classical
Object card: 1968. Mission archéologique française de Kition-Salamine (MOM, Lyon), Nakala, SAL_3818. "Terracotta fragment of a deer held by a goddess, Classical". CC BY 4.0. Resized.
Fragment of a deer's body on the forearm and left hand, lacking the hindquarters, with a short drooping tail. The wrist is bent downward and the hand curves gently upward; the deer is in the same position as the previous one, but its left foreleg, with a finely modelled hoof, is strongly folded under the belly, the knee against the goddess's thumb, while the left hindleg, folded forward, has its knee on the wrist and its hoof behind the thumb, making the thigh stand out. Fingers missing. Pinkish-buff fabric. Mould-made, hollow. H. 5.4 cm; l. 9.3 cm. Only the very long thumb and the index finger pressed against it remain; drapery in heavy concentric folds (widening towards the elbow) wraps the forearm completely down to the wrist (long sleeve?). Inventory Tc_1198; 16 September 1968.
