Terracotta head of the Great Goddess with calathos, Salamis

Incomplete terracotta head with calathos of the Great Goddess, Classical period, from the spoil heap at Salamis, Cyprus; inventory Tc_0891. Only the left profile survives, with the corresponding part of the calathos (broken) and a fragment of the back; pink fabric with beige core and poorly preserved white slip; hollow mould-made, with deep incised retouching on the hair and traces of scraping on the back; good workmanship, H. 10.4 cm. The cheek, well modelled, and the visible ear, well drawn, remain; long hair, waved in soft undulations, passes round the ears and falls behind. The calathos has a relief band at its lower edge; the only decoration is an incised vertical line on the side (fragment of a tab or crenellation design). H. 10,4. Du visage ne subsistent que la joue, bien modelée, et l'oreille, apparente, bien dessinée. Cheveux longs, ondulés en vagues souples, contournant les oreilles et retombant par derrière. Calathos au bord inférieur en relief seul signe de décor : une ligne verticale incisée sur le côté (fragment d'un dessin de languette ou de créneau). Boucle d'oreille : pastille plate et pendant conique (l'oreille restant apparente).
