Moulded Roman lamp with vine-branch medallion, Sondage Z

Complete, rejoined moulded lamp, Type 11 (cf. Sal. 425), of fine pinkish-salmon clay with no slip or glaze; ht. 2.1, ø base 4, ø 6.8, L. 9.5. Deformed by the addition of two diametrically opposed ears (flattened volutes) on the body, set on the axis perpendicular to the handle-nozzle axis; the nozzle is in the shape of a marine anchor, and the flat base is marked with three concentric circles. The central medallion, defined by three concentric rings, shows a vine branch (cf. Sal. 608), and the rim is decorated with a row of triple adjoining ovolos that break off on each side at the nozzle to make room for the counter-turned half-volutes of the nozzle. Roman period.
