ANTONIS SUB[?FOR143 Oct 29, 1947 - (6 wheelbarrows, 8 picks & shovellers,/MAN] We once more opened excavations, after a survey yesterday with B.H.H. Objects: 1. To look for some clue as to the arrangement of stairways, or to otherwise explain how the spectators got up to their seats; and, 2. To tidy up the whole place, making it show better its form and the ancient ground level.
To this end we commenced at Trench 7 (south gate) where we will remove the inside dumps of 1939 to a little under ancient level, and dig down within the south side, along the euthynteria course until we join this up with trench 4. I shall call this
TRENCH 4 EXTENSION Over fourth stone in foundation course, from crack between stone filling (+ part of original fill) - terracotta head of woman, with polos.
On first block of pier (1st east of doorway) masons mark - K
About 5 m. east of gate found euthynteria course in situ. Chips of rocks coping course appearing. No sherds.
