23 Trench 2 stratum to can removed in I- j in K there are many smallish fallen stones in 2. The line of the cutting continues to curve toward the end of the wall in M. The space constantly narrows. In section M; in N the cut rock appears to go back W, and there is a large fill of small Xafxapa stones; I am digging around them for the present. May 31: In section K K and A the first (black) & second (red) strata drop deep - c. 25 × 35 cen. - between the wedge of the trench & the cut rock. Below them is a stratum of small Xafxapa stones, which rises in N to a depth of about 35 below surface against the cut rock in the M south part of N, c. 45 deep and 40 × 35 10 in decreasing sects. Above it and held back by it (i.e. S) the small xafxapa rises rapidly on about a line with the rock ramps, which here drops. In N' we run into the wall ending at the W end, and a large square block at about 70 cen at about 10 cen deep in the middle. The E edge is finely cut, about 80 cen. from the E edge of N' - between it & N' is a fill of small xafxapa stones almost to the surface. In Ξ' there is a 1st stratum of surface soil of only about 10 cen, then more small Xafxapa. In N' and Ξ' the end of the wall was located; the large square block forms its NE corner, and it continues in a line of cemented stone. Photo 12: N & N' with top soil removed and part of xafxapa taken.

June 1st: Today four more squares were opened out in a line to continue O'-T', following N to the W end of the stadium. See plan on 18 cells for some notes. Section I. The bed rock at the E end, not far below the surface in any face, widens toward the south, from 35 to 45 centimeters. The rest of the trench faces the rock cut sharply down to c. 45 cen., and here filled in with some traces of the cement floor. Section K: The upper rock continues to widen, reaching 75 at its S end, where is one of the shoe-shaped quarry cuttings (?). The rest is partially filled in by small stones, on some of which the cement is again preserved of the floor. The depth of earth here deepens, from the 45 of I to 60. The strata are still two (black + red) and up to it even in the line. Section Λ. The high rock here widens to 1,15 meters, and rises to the surface in the center of the section, to drop abruptly again at the end. The earth again rises toward the stadium wall; the strata are about 25 cen. each; in the top one are some small fallen stones. Below these two strata of earth a stratum of small xafxapa stones (very thin) begins; it too slopes upward, and was apparently covered with a coat of white plaster, much destroyed; we dug through it a d'about 10 cen. into the stones, which still drop down. cont 27
