and the trunk of the horse. Therefore, when these three parts are together and joined in one piece, whether so preserved or so joined from any number of pieces, the whole piece is numbered and registered in the catalogue, where these rules are formulated today (see pages 51 and 50). Otherwise, the joined piece is labelled, in India ink, on the break which will eventually be hidden, stating proveniences of both parts of the join, and is sent back to its appropriate place in the joining room to await a further join.

I opened the mold today and found despitite the poor quality of the plaster that the results merited further work.

Another basket was found in washing today completely filled with heads. This is the fourth such, and Christos and Mc- Fadden both remember some talk of sepaparating heads at the time of storage. I am convinced that the workmen, or washers, separated out heads to the point where sections became mixed, because of the great discrepancies in the number of heads per section, discrepancies not noted elsewhere. At any rate, too much importance should not be attached to proveniences of human heads - there will be plenty of much more unimspeachable data. No. of joins - 22.

Nov. 9As neither Kyriakos nor Nicolas were available to me today, I spent the day with Antonis going through the baskets of bodies and sorting them more carefully, putting away the baskets, and in general preparing everything for a long siege of steady work. We also sorted the baskets that came in from the washing yesterday. No work was done with joining, but tickets were placed on all the shelves and a set of slips, elastic bands, and a pencil placed in the workroom, so that, under Antonis supervision the finder will make out his own slip when he finds a join, attach it to the body by a rubber band, and bring it to Christos for checking and gluing. -- In the late after noon and after dinner I made five more molds and set the casts.

Nov. 10Since Nikos is again in Limassol, we have hired a new man to wash - Euthymios and do general helpers work. Kyriakos was also at Curium today, so finds were lower, though Nikos surprised me by joining a few pieces in the late afternoon and in general helping Antoni. I opened and repaired the five casts of last night and catalogued the horseman figurines we separated out yesterday. The washing is now being done under constant supervision and with water only, since it appears that carelessness of washers sometimes destroyed paint in the original work. Joins: 13
