8. Nov.5 Method of Separation for the present, and were arranged on the last row of shelves in the 3rd apotheke room, in three groups, a+b together, b, c, and d. Each section of these shelves was labelled by excavation section and type of fragments - e.g. "NEI, Sherds".

The table-height row of shelves in the first and second racks of the 3rd apotheke were labelled by section, and on them were placed the human heads of the upper stratum baskets. b At At present the problem is to join these heads to their bodies (or so I take it, since the problem of joining is the longest and most difficult problem in the whole work and therefore should be started upon its course;) solution at once; and by joining heads to bodies we will gain the third essential bit of information - the relation of Types b (see p. 5) to Types a and the Molds, and the terracottas will be in a position to be scientifically studied. Therefore the heads, within each section, were arranged according to clues which would appear presumably on the body which joined them. From right to left they ranged according to where broken off, from neckbreaks to complete bodies wanting bases or horses; from front to back in each section by fired color, from bright red through [illegible] various shades to black. Below were placed the baskets containing the bodies

The system of arrangement described seems to have all the characteristics, to me, of near perfection, save that it apparently doesn't work. Four of us, hunting for two hours, found five joins, and there again fresh breaks. And the system of arrangement did show that none of the bodies did not have joining heads on the racks. The problem is now whether another system of work must be devised, whether the of joins tests are are completely mixed not only by sections but by strata, or whether this "altar" only contains parts of pieces, the other parts being elsewhere. The first is not yet proved; the third second defies solution, and so I believe tomorrow we will separate the second "stratum"; it cannot do any harm, it will be an advantage for any sort of work to have some separation within the section, and Mr Fadden tells me he doesn't believe much in the two strata himself.
