108.T 1001

1001: Assembled from six pieces in NE1 and NW2 sections. Coarse tan clay. H: 27.4 cm.

Feet, right chest & lower r. arm, and several small pieces around neck missing. Head badly bashed in.

Youth (?) stands facing, with l. arm against body, holding something before him, and l. arm (as preserved) in approximately same position. The body is formed of a hollow cylinder, with a round hole behind about half-way up, and swelling from waist to shoulders. Two breaks in front about where feet were attacked, probably to represent them protuding from a low-hanging robe. The face, of exceedingly crude workmanship, looks straight ahead - the mouth is a straight slit with lips pinched out, the eye-sockets pushed in and a small ball of clay attached to each, the nose (missing) was also attached, as are the enormous ears and a crown across the upper forehead. A large hole behind each ear probably supported a metal tiara. The hair is scratched on in crude incised lines in the wet clay. Head joined May, 1939.

On the chest is incised, in wet clay, an inscription. Alphabet: AEINΠCCOUω

See pag 140, not.

Drawing: inscription with surrounding break line and pointer; labels: key pebble for join
