On Trench 86, before refilling (v.p. 69 repairs)

The trench was cut as a rectangle about 2 by 3 meters, just west of the road to the sea. At a little over .50 depth, a layer of small stones along W\* side of trench, closely parallel to present road. The level seems distinguishable all round the walls of the trench, with a petering out of actual stones toward the E in both N and S scarps. (might have been an earlier position of the road to the sea, but not much confirmation in other trenches further down.) At depth ca. 1.50 the surface of a layer of broken stones clearly visible crossing to NE corner of the trench and on the west side, southern part (more than half), but lacking on the S side & S part of the E side. Across the N side a whitish stroma seems distinguishable

\* N.b. points of compass here used as though road ran N-S. Not accurate.
