39 (8/VI/40) with leaves #31 Removed these bones. The piece under #67 and the piece in which the teeth had been set went to earth. In this last a bit of gold, no recognized shape. The teeth much ground down.
The floor or slightly above on which lay this burial no. 4, p. 9 (as well as the lowest other objects found before we cut down (see p. 31) to lowest level) is now all cleared save for a few split frags. of the longer bones near the N wall (extending E from 2.00/1.00N, flush w. floor, and slightly tilted or piled just under the small martyri still left in the middle of the N wall. These probably belong with the bones found along the wall there at a somewhat higher level. Question whether this floor was deliberately strewn in preparation for this use of tomb or just drifted in. Evidence suggests strewing, the skeleton having been just covered; chipping along the .06 high scarp, cannot see any more difference between the N end (where fallen fill should have small stones in it) and further S, than that the N end was cleared before we

40 (8/VI/40) left on the cruise and has grown hard. The skull may have been crushed deliberately so less fill would be necessary to cover things decently. Possibly small objects were removed at that time. Christo calls, digs further into the scarp, we see that there are actually no little stones under the N wall, and he finds no difference, until the bottom, save apparently bigger chunks of chavara mixed with the sand toward the N. At bottom, as remarked p. 37, the N end of floor cleared is pebbly to match the walls above it, as was see p. 6)/ the fill above the more or less homogeneous strewn (?) earth floor now being cleared away. Indicating that the upper fill, p. 9. covering burial 4, p. 9, was probably natural fall, which had concealed the bones & small offerings, at any rate, before the tomb was again entered. The strewn (?) fill presents a not altogether smooth surface toward the west, but this may be mostly the way it was cleared. Over near the N wall at ca. 2.40/1.00 a large bluish stone partly amongs front. See diag. 25
