Work continued clearing bones of skeleton ate by "Big nail" (2.50 point on plan) "N" of center line, cleared more gold, group of larger leaves, "W" of bowl #7 ^#9a, a few cm. higher than gold #9, but perhaps same period. Bones "S" of center line covered w. thick layer of black sticky stuff, of which some kept as sample. Cleaning done by Achmet, VG, S. Anderson (who cleaned both bones of this skeleton and ^also a ⁴⁹ pottery alabastron against N wall (brown crumbly earth, with small frags. of bone; mouth of alab. missing); and N. Cheremeteff who asked pertinent questions and cleaned the teeth of the beastbaby.

17/V/40 - 18/V/40 Yesterday decided to take down earth left high when we step down into the tomb. ("NW" corner of tomb). Removed a bit of carbon (.076 below top of iron object, .59 fr. 2.50 nail ("Big nail") and 6.09 from nail 1.00 "S" of 3.00 on center line) Removed also iron object ^#47 which was also in way of disposal of earth and had a piece broken thus (drawing) This turned out to be a strigil, handle up, curved part toward "E", & down into earth its tip at level ,815 below nail. Earth in this corner had grown very hard from exposure and trampling. No further finds except just "W" of high bones, where 2 fine glass flasks and part of another (#50-52) and on top of one (yellow one) a small bronze needle or ^{P. 54} pin now in pieces and prob. incomplete (lay on 1/2 51 1/2 "and a bit of bone and some glass"). Also * #538. can of earth). Near by, foresper engraved.

Continued work clearing bones in neighborhood of BIG NAIL. There seem to be two sets, those "S" of center line being at a lower level and distinguished by a thick layer of black (nearly .01 thick) about and over them. Some reddening and darkening of earth by oth bones also. Ten
