Certainly the cutting in the bedrock for the drain of draining of water from the building wall of roof over the baths proper so seems to have been made after the walls were laid. Thus it goes around in back of the wall instead of cutting diagonally a cross- the shorter distance. It joins the straight piece parallel to the wall of the room with flag stones This straight piece ends wall about where the room with flagstones ends so that it would seem to have been cut to catch the water from its roof. The fill thus behind the wall and which filled in the drain would be contemporary with the filling in of the cistern, and the hard fill in the drain would be similar to the hard fill in the drain from the cold baths. So that the cistern would have been used contemporaneously with the building if not constructed as part of it. The walls in the cistern wall and windows in the cistern would be contemporary with the long ish period of disuse between the time the building went out of use as a bath and its reconstruction.

The drain from the roof of the earlier building bath building, did not flow in this direction It was a smaller building with a smaller roof. If it did flow into this drain, it is beyond a doubt that the wall a around which the drain is dug existed at the time of the earlier bath building. Certainly one drain from the earlier bath building flowed into the box which was subsequently filled in by stones, to make way for the later stairs and entrance to the bath. The water from this box was led around the stones blocks which are were a continuation of the no east side of the mosaic entrance room
If the water from the roof of the earlier bath used this drain, it may flowed arou the drain may have turned around the EW wall just south of earlier bath. The filling in of blocking up of this passage could best be ex which blocking up should be contemporary with the building of the main bath building because of the pipe-line could be best explained as the filling in of space between two already existing walls.
N. B. Check, this earlier drain.
