dig down in section d: 1 (JFD, VIII p. 84), where there is a strip of gritty red earth left between the intrusion & the wall. First clean out a bit more of the intrusion, which was left uncleared in the south.

The gritty red earth is found covering all but part of one stone of the second course of the wall, so there is no doubt but that it came in after the wall was built.

In the north the gritty red is not found, but pinkish earth with much chavara, which looks suspiciously archaic. This gives way to a layer of chavara at the level of the bed rock S., and goes down into a pit filled with earth & numerous sherds.

South the gritty red goes to bed rock. The line of the wall below the stones is filled with dark red clay.
