28-5-38TR. 18

Start trench 18, 1.50 × 6.00, due north of tr. 11, parallel to tr. 15.

30-5-38 50 cm. down we find sandy brown earth in the S and a chavara fill in the north. On the west the chavara is cut by red earth. Dig below .50 in the south

2-6-38 We extended tr. 18, 14.00 meters to the east (S-E), finding the chavara fill everywhere. We then extend it another 10 M., leaving the first 4 M. undug. At we find bed-rock feat on the N-W and N-E. Stones appear in the cuttings, and beyond them a level of whitish earth at This whitish earth is the same as the chavara fill, to which it slopes down. The cuttings in the rock are treasurehunters' shafts. There are no traces of walls in this trench. Late, greybrown, soil goes down throughout, either on bed-rock or on a regular fill of decomposed chavara rock, which was spread out to level off the unevenness of the rock. The only divergence from this is caused by tomb-robbers' intrusions (To p. 163)
