there was clayey red earth with white grits from 11.62 down. Photo 282 showing N-S wall partly cleared, and red earth in S, not yet dug. The red earth stops at 11.68 with a trod (?) level of red with some grey particles. The red earth lay over the N-S wall.

20-5-38 there is still some grey accumulation left over the 11.68 floor in the E., so we cut it, finding the "11.68" floor everywhere. It is actually at 11.65 = [(23-5-38 find 11.67)] 11.81 . In the E. we find a shallow pit. Clear it.

23-5-38 Remove the stones in the E. below the 11.65 = 11.81 level. They are in soft brown earth, and are loose, not built. They stop at 12.09 with fine sandy dark grey earth. Digg below 12.09, through similar loose fill with many stones apparently not in situ, to 12.65. This does not seem to be the end of the fill, but it is hard to dig deeper in this narrow space.
