17-5-382E3 West (from p.69) (77)

Photos 276-277 of 2E3 at 11.62 and 2E4 at 11.62 56, with some earth still left on the floor. Find a shallow pit cut through the 11.62 floor. Clear it. We have been digging through fine sandy earth with much ash ever since 11.50. This is accumulation similar to that in 2E4 West. There has been a change of earth between 2E3 + 2E4 from the 11.40 level on down, probably representing a continuation of the S. wall of 2:27. The soft grey-brown earth of this section stops at 11.62, so the wall rested on this level.

18-5-38 The real floor in 2E3 is at 11.68, of reddish clayey earth with yellow, grey, + white particles. It is very firm and surely long-trod. Some grey accumulation was left over the floor in the E., so we cut through it. The pit was sunk from the accumulation.

19-5-38 Dig through 11.68 in the west, finding traces of a N-S wall covered by the floor. In the south corner of 2E3 (to p. 87)
