end of the S. sect. (near the "pit"), the sandy reddish earth stops at a less sandy layer of firm grey-brown earth with stones, sloping up in the north. This seems to be the earth over the "pit", which may be more properly a mound.

17-5-38 Tr. 12 S. Dig below 7.21 and find darker earth with sherds and small stones at 7.31. This level is redder & less stoney in the East, where there is perhaps still some earth over the very stoney level. Extend by a trench 1m. wide and 7 m. long running west from by the pit. Call this "2nd W. ext.". At 6.79 the earth turns yellower and we isolate two intrusions. Slightly redder earth is reached at 6.95, and another intrusion is found. Some stones appear at this level. Dig below it and find firmer earth with many stones at 7.05. This seems to be the top of the "pit". In the west end an intrusion goes down into a pit with many pithos sherds. There are many stones (to p. 83)
