gives way to a packed layer with many stones, ca. 25 to 35 cm. from the surface. This stops at the loose, storey fill.

13-5-38 In the east of the section dug the loose stone fill and the clayey layer below it stop with a line of stones, east of which the earth is loose & red. Careful investigation shows that we have been digging in the Baugrab of a massive wall, and that these stones are its outer face, never intended to be seen.

16-5-38 Start to open another section over this tomb (?), to the S. of the present section, so as to land inside. Clean the stones found Friday and find the inner face of the right angle between two walls. In the new section plowed soil stops 20 cm. down at clean red earth. This stops at a 45 cm. at consistent layer, in places the stoney pack noted above, in others yellow-brown earth which lies directly under the stoney pack. This layer slopes down (to p. 75)
