Investigate a tomb reported during the winter, when an oxes foot went down in it. It is several times cleared, once carefully, perhaps by the Brit. Mus., again more recently. Find L.C.II sherds in it. The dromos is on the west. A large ρούφα was built over it after its collapse. Photo 263 of tomb A with ρούφα cleared to show cross-section of fill. Break the ρούφα, hoping that it spared some of the tomb, but find that all its sides do lie on bed-rock.

5-5-38 Find Tomb 3, apparently unplundered, and start clearing it. (See p. 53) We have sunk numerous pits on this slope, finding a few tombs plundered recently, but many more destroyed for ρούφες. These are grain pits of still uncertain date, made by smearing a prepared cavity with clay and then lighting a fire inside, turning the clay to terracotta. The system is apparently still used in the Acanthou Region. One or two contain ash at the bottom, and most have pottery of kitchen type.
