Photo 225-7/622-4-38Outside the stone pit the red fill stops with the burnt layer, which slopes down around the pit. It may have been trod during the period of use of the pit. A pot is found sunk in it (p. 166:7) P2847 of pit cleared and burnt layer. Start to cut through the burnt layer. It is a deep fill of pure ash, with occasional lumps of burnt brick. It goes down to a low circle of clay and a clayey floor. The ash was heavier behind this circle, and may have been packed. In the line of the wall to 4:1 the ash gives way to whitish earth, save in the E. end where it continues over red clay, possibly a door. The ash fill continues past a brick partition and west of the stone-lined pit, whose west stones are burnt. Part of the burnt brick layer which lay above the ash is attached to the stonelined pit in such a way as to suggest that it may have formed a platform between the top of the pit to the brick partition. Clean the N + W walls-beds, lying on bed-rock.

TR. 6 (from p. 187)(191)

pit # 122-4-38In the N. section we find loose fairly red earth with many stones going to a wall, ... down. Actually this stoney strosis goes under the wall, which rests on earth. In the extreme N. find another wall, on light brown earth. There is a pit between the two walls, with black earth. The pit in the S. section was filled with the red earth of the thick strosis over the rock.
