22.3.38 TRENCH 2

Start season off with men. Begin by clearing out earth brought in by rains, and by moving track preparatory to moving big dump. Photos Bam 143-154 of trench 2 and site in general. Photos Bam 155-156 of 2:2 prior to digging below 8.98=9.21 Photo Bam 157 of 2:8, showing pit tops at 10.44= 10.73 floor.

2:8 Start clearing pit #2. It is sunk below the 10.44=(10.55)=10.73 floor. The first 15 cm. contain hard soil; below it is seems softer + sandier, red-brown in colour. At 25=45 cm. the red fill stops at fine sandy earth, dark grey in colour. The black earth stops at a hard layer of decomposed rock, and bed-rock is reached at ca. 50 cm. It was sunk from 10.26/10.37

2:24 Clear to level, removing bricks. Dig through the level, finding bed-rock a few centimeters below, at 9.13=9.85, save in the north, where there is a deep fill of clayey decomposed rock, apparently a continuation of the "Prehistoric fill" of 2:25A. Photos Bam 158-159
