lot continued on Sheet LVIII : 5

March 1Start work in lot # 270 of the Land Survey sheet, LIII : 61 . I am hoping to find a L.C.II and III city site, and chose this lot because of its proximity to the L.C.II necropolis, because of its good location, and the possibility of fair depth of earth, rather than for any positive indication. There are sherds on the surface from R.P. to archaic, with a majority of L.C.II, but these are not a sure guide since they may be washed down from the cemetery above. More indicative were several fragments of mudbrick, burnt, near where I sink trench # 1, and the presence of many fragments of pithoi, probably too large to be from tombs. The chief reason for digging here was the lack of better indications elsewhere. There must have been a city since there was a cemetery. Since no traces are to be found on the surface, it can be located only by trial trenches.

Sink two trenches, numbered for convenience # # 1 + 2, each 2 meters wide and 10 meters long.
