19.3.37TRENCH 7

Start trench 7, between trenches 5 and 3, hoping to find the city wall. Soon find two large platforms, the top built of loose stones with a face of larger ones. The two platforms are adjacent, the upper higher than the lower. A strosis of fairly solid earth goes to not far from the top of the lower terrace. The upper terrace rests on this strosis, reaching bed-rock at the top only. Both terraces are covered by a uniform layer of rather hard black earth with some small stones. This is probably fortuitous, not built. There are Early Roman sherds in it.

22.3.37 Extend the trench downhill, and soon find the outside wall, as in trench 3. Here too there is Roman fill outside the wall, black and nearly black earth continuing on down.

23.3.37 Dig inside the circuit wall, hoping to find an inner face. At below the surface ( absolute) starts a fill of yellowish earth, relatively (to p. 159)
