Discover mosaic in section I, and clear about half of it. It is in relatively good condition. The soil over it (ca. deep) contains a great many roof-tiles, of square Roman type, but almost nothing which could be from walls. It thus seems likely that we have here a porch of some sort, without walls, but simply a tiled roof supported by posts or columns. a fragment of a marble column found in this fill may belong to the porch.

Wall Δ-I is set on a deep foundation of roughset stones, going to bed-rock. The stones in this foundation are set with mud in which is mixed a great-deal of ash. The first course of the wall is set upon a bed of plaster.

Start a trench at right-angles to 27, down the hill, and about opposite to θ. (to p. 10)
