23-6-39Room B (fm. p. 71) Soundings below raised mosaic
Clear the pit in the region W. of the W. wall (under panel 2). It contained grey-brown earth with many sherds and stone chips. It was cut through clean sandy light grey-brown earth at 0.40. Remove the sandy earth at 0.40. It goes to a sloping level of hard earth with much gypsum and fragments of lime plaster, at 0.70 = 0.90. The wall continues below. In the East section (under panels 3 + 4) we dig below the 0.50 floor, th level, through medium grey brown earth with some stones, and find in places bed-rock, in others clean light greyish brown sandy earth, at 0.60 (E) = 0.70 (W). This level is cut for the E part (buffer) of the W. wall. The 0.50 level went to the wall without a break.

Dig below 0.70 = 0.90 under panel 2, through hard limey earth, and find a firm fairly regular brown level at 0.75 = 0.90. The wall appears to lie on this. It is very near to bed-rock.

Under panel 2 we find a N-S foundation 0.22 (S) under the mosaic. It is in the line of the E. wall of room It is in the line of the lower stone of the N wall, by the inscription ante. In the S it makes a clear corner with the eastern part of the E-W wall of room B. The rubble masonry over the euthynteria course and all the W masonry of this E-W wall are later than the eastern euthynteria and the early N-S foundation.
