32. [margin left: Photo from E] Test Pit I In order to look at foundations (incidently to follow drain "δ") dig test pit at Test Pit (plan p. 2.) Pit c. 2.00 × 2.00 m We go down c. 1.50 m All the fill seems late, dump contemp orary with late use of building, roof tiles and cement with rare pot sherds (3 noted) both "ridged ware", medium coarse, Also from here 3 lumps of slag one with much iron, also a bit of glass.
Wall D, whose E face is here exposed is well built of reused blocks and stands at least 1.40 m. high. (not dug to depth.) Note one reused block inscribed with "Π".
Pit II (following p. 33) The nature of the fill here looks as though we were digging in a previously dug pit. The sides hard, the fill rough and of later date than less deeply dug SW corner of this room. Drain "δ" incomplete here and as it is uncovered now seems to run down to E and to W from this point.
