Removed same area as above 2953-2 reddish brown hard fill with fair number of stones - great many I see now almost more than soil averaging between egg and fist size - rather uniform in size, no tiles, handful of sherds and iron frag. placed Page 2976 in box with sherds in sherd bag. No other finds. Removed same area as on 8 Jan 2957-2, compact fill of dark soil with good many stones averaging between egg and fist size. About 1/3 bucket sherds & about 1/3 bucket tiles which I have thrown out; one glass frag. F 1978 and 1 pot handle with incised character. Coin F 1980 found at bottom of strat. at 1.50 m. below window sill of Guard House. No other finds. Page 2978 Removed 7.80-9.00 m. n. of S. wall of S. Bldg. between S & SE Bldgs. 2955-2, compact reddish soil with moderate number of stones - mainly about egg size but some up [inserted in red: Pld. VI] to foot size, probably all fill from the top of 2955-2 down. About 23/ bucket tiles which I am stacking at 9.10 m. n. of S. face of S. wall of S. Bldg. just s. of those from 2955-1. Box of thin blown glass frags. F 1981 and coin F 1982, No other finds. Removed S. of S. Bldg. 1.75-2.75 m. s. of S. wall & 39.00-41.00 m. e. of W. wall 2635-4s (See Diary Jan 5, 52) dark brown soil - very clean soil - about 5 stones only about fist size. See also 2951-4. About 2 handfuls of sherds & 1 piece of lead (in Sherd Bag). No other finds. Page 2980 Removed 0.70-1.90 m. n. of S. face of S. Bldg. s. wall between S & SE Bldgs 2957-3, reddish about 2/3 bucket compact soil with many rough stones from fist to foot in size; ^{of roof tiles,} 2 handfuls of roof tiles, 2 handfuls of sherds, 1 pot handle with Cypriot character F 1783. No other finds. Stacking tiles on S. wall against e. wall of S. Bldg. 11 Jan 52. 5 men - fine weather. Removed 2955-3, same area as yesterday moderately compact whitish fill but workman also took some red soil lower down - comparatively few stones - all rough ones not larger than egg size except near w. wall of SE Bldg. at bottom near bedrock where some are up to foot size - about 1/10 bucket of sherds and 10 Page 2982 tile frags. which I am stacking on foundation wall of e. wall of S. Bldg. at 8.80 m. n. of S. wall. No other finds. Extended 2953-1 to 1.05 m. w. of w. face of e. wall of S. Bldg. (in Guard House) removing strat. described on p. 2972 and an additional handful of sherds & small figurine frag. which I am leaving in sherd bag. Putting these sherds in 2953-1 of Jan. 8; Found also here coin F 1984 at bottom of stratum below level of top of foundation of e. wall of S. Bldg. Removed clean soil, no sherds or finds save coin on top of strata left as sample from last year at 42.60 m. e. of w. wall of S. Bldg. See Film 163-13 also 163-12 before removing clean soil [inserted in red: Ptd II / F 1985 / [illegible] / F 1985 Aurei,] Page 2984 The coin was lying at the level of 2633-1 on a sample of 2633-3. See Diaryp.2950. Removed 1.75-2.75 m. s. of S. Bldg. 39.540-40.45 e. of w. wall 2635-5 (s) (see Film 163-12) down to bedrock red compact soil few stones - very small ones only averaging less than walnut size - almost a natural stratum. 5 sherds only - no other finds save pot handle with character F 1986. Removed between S & SE Bldgs. 0.70-1.80 m. north of s. wall of S. Bldg. (surfac 2957-4, I see no real difference between 2957-3 and 4, reddish compact soil with many stones from fist to foot size - about 1/10 bucket sherds - 7 small tile frag which I have thrown out. Removed 7.80-9.00 m. n. of s. wall of S. Bldg. between S & SE Bldgs. 2955-4 (finds only from 00-0.80 m. w. of e. wall of SE Bldg.) handful of sherds, 1/4 bucket of tiles near foundation of e. wall of SE Bldg. Coin F 1987, frag. ribbed glass vase F 1988. No other finds. Reddish brown soil, moderately compact with a great many stones from 00-0.80 m. w. of e. wall (SE Bldg.) averagin foot size with one bucket size. Removed 1 very large stone about twice bucket siz on top of 2955-4 near e. wall of SE Bldg. From 0.80 to e. wall of S. Bldg. reddis compact soil with very small stones only & few. 00-0.80 w. of e. wall of SE Bldg here probably a footing trench Tiles stacked on bedrock.
