Removed Curium Gate landing 2.35-3225 m. n. of s. wall, p. 2915-4 reddish loose soil good number of rough stones averaging less thanfist size, about 1 bucket of sherds, about 1/5 bucket tiles which I am stacking on gateway wall at 3.70 m. north of s. wall. From here came 4 ter. water pipe frags. P 1959 and some glass F 1960, and 3 lamp frags. F 1961. Page 2940 28 Dec. 51. Guard & boy only. Removed 00-0.68 m. s. of s. wall of S. Bldg. 00-0.50 m. w. of e. wall 2917-1, reddish brown loose soil, about 1 bucket of rough stones averaging less than fist size - largest being fist size; no tiles; 2 handfu of sherds, thrown out; 2 glass frags. F 1962 and lamp handle F 1963. 29 Dec. 51. Guard & boy only. Removed same area as above 2917-2, down to foundation of s. wall at s.e. corner dark loose soil with small stones (about 2 buckets full) averaging egg size or smaller, 3 tile frags - thrown out. 8 sherds No other finds. Page 2942 31 Dec. 51. Extended 2917-1 to 1.40 m. s. of s. wall - removing from 2917-1 3 nondescript sherds & 3 tile frags. all thrown out. Removed 2917-3, from 00-.1.40 m. south darkish loose soil with rough stones, good many, averaging about egg to fist size. 7 tile frags. which I am stacking on wall foundation. 2 handfuls of sherds. No other finds. Removed 00-1.90 m. south of e. wall of corridor 1 of S. Bldg. 2941-1 to find whether this wall had projected further south at one time (if it is earlier than bldg. of 101 A.D.). Removed 1 tile frag. - thrown out - about 3 handfuls of sherds, 1 glass frag, base of vase F 1964. No other finds. Page 2943 The soil was whitish and moderately compact without sherds. Removed also from here 2941-2, all rough stones averaging from fist to foot size - very little soil - almost all stones. Handful of sherds only. No other finds. Removed also same place 2941-3, reddish brown loose soil, with good number of rough stones averaging from egg to foot in size; no tiles; handful of sherds; handle with Cypriot character F 1965. Page 2946 Widened trench a little to the east (see Film 163-9) & removed handful sherds and a few tile frags. which I have thrown out. 1 Jan 52. holiday. 2 Jan 52. 5 men only. 6 hours. Very fine weather. Removed s. of s. wall of S. Bldg. (00-1.95 m. s.) 00-1.50 m. e. of w. face of e. wall of room 4, P. 2947-1 (see also p. ). loose brown soil with few stones averaging about egg size about 1/8 bucket tile frags. which I am throwing out. Bldg. and 00-1.00 w. of projection south of e. face of e. wall of room 5 2949-1 loose brown soil slightly reddish in parts, few rough stones averaging not more than fist size, about 1/3 bucket of sherds, 2 tile frags. only which I have thrown out. All fill below ground level of 101 A.D. No other finds. Removed s. of S. Bldg. 39.00-40.40 m. e. of w. wall p. 2633-3 hard compact fill of many rough stones averaging about fist size very light yellowish brown soil; 13 small tile frags.- thrown out; about 1/4 bucket sherds, glass frags. including a glass lamp of saucer type with pinched lip F 1966, and frag. of terracotta lamp F 1962x7. Removed s. of S. Bldg. 00-3.00 m. at 24.00-25.30 m. e. of w. wall p. 2615-2 Page 2952 loose brown soil with few stones - rough ones only - averaging about fist size none as large as foot in size - about 1/3 bucket sherds - 3 small tile frags. which I have thrown out. Ter. lamp frag. F 1968. All fill^apparently - no debris 4 Jan. 52. 423 men. Removed s. of S. Bldg. 00-2.90 m. 00-1.50 m. e. of w. face of w. wall of room 4, 2947-2 much the same as 2947-1. I see no real difference. 4 sherds only - no other finds n. of wall and 4 handfuls of sherds s. of wall and 2 tile frags. which I am placing in sherd bag. No other finds. Removed also s. of wall in same trench (s. of early wall) Page 2956 2947-1 - much the same as 2947-1 north of wall which I removed on Jan. 2. 1/6 bucket sherds and 4 tile frags. which I am throwing out.
