Diary page 2884 Continued to set up door jambs and north and south niches of room 2, SE Bldg. Lateral position of niches determined by jamb tie pieces. Position of n. niche lintel is certain as will be made clear by photo Film 158-16 & 17. Height of s. niche lintel based on assumption that both lintels were at same levels. The sill of s. niche may have been placed by us 0.045-0.05 m. too low in wall. It will be clear Page 2886 from reconstruction that this is the only margin of error possible.
Removed s.e. of supporting wall for SE Bldg. court's stone pithos 2885-1. See Film 158-18. Hard reddish brown soil with hardly any stones - none larger than walnut size save for one frag. stone slab. One small tile frag. only - placed in sherd bag. About 1/12 bucket sherds. No other finds.
Mr. Hill dug small hole at junction of pithos supporting wall and w. stylobate. Found plaster on s. face of supporting wall here - some sherds - a few ribbed and lamp frag. F 1933. Throw out sherds. Wall plaster on supporting wall Page 2888 found to depth of 0.16 m. below top of w. stylobate.
22 June51. Removed Trench 11 north of SE Bldg. xxv-xxvii E 14-16, N 22-28, 2823-1, and section of 2823-2 (E 14.00-15.40) together. No difference noted but 2 is at level of bedrock and in rock depression. Loose light brown soil with few stones averaging fist size but up to nearly bucket size. One worked block 0.57x 0.23 x 0.215 found on bedrock at N 24 E 15 which I am leaving as found. 3 tile frags. Am placing these on worked block. See Film 158 - . About 1/6 bucket sherds. No other finds.
Page 2890 Removed in. of SE Bldg. (Trench 11 system) E 8.00-12.00 n. 9.80-16.00, 2877-1. Very loose dark soil with great many rough stones averaging about fist size but some up to bucket size. About 1 1/2 buckets of tiles which I am stacking on north wall of SE Bldg. at E 8.00. About 3/4 bucket sherds. Frag. of draped knee of stone statue F 1934. Over a bucket of small frags. worked blocks which I am stacking just west of tiles on wall. This stratum was one wholly of debris. Pot handle with incised letter F 1935; and 4 frags. of teracotta figurines F 1936.
23 June51. Removed SE Bldg. court small hole at juncture of supporting wall of large stone pithos of nw. corner and n. stylobate. See Film 158-26, 2891-1 Page 2892 immediately below point where stylobate was cut for lead pipe to bring water to pithos. Handful of sherds only and lamp frag. F 1937. Both sherds & lamp frag. found at depth lower than 0.18 m. below top of n. stylobate (same below dotted line in section). Dug here to find any traces of lead pipe and to find plaster on outside face of pithos's supporting wall. This was found down to slightly below level of foundation for the north stylobate (see section p. 2891).
23 June51. Removed n. of SE Bldg., N 9.80-12.00 E 8.00-12.00, 2877-2, reddish brown soil moderately compact many rough stones up to bucket size. Worked blocks as seen in Film 158-24 & 25. Page 2894 Have given one worked block, a cornice, number 80, on pavement west of north porch of SE Bldg. Other worked blocks with numbers from this area are 55, 79. These blocks have not been removed. There are others that will be catalogued and ue course. About 1 1/2 to 2 buckets of roof tiles which I am stacking at E 11.00, on north wall of SE Bldg. About 2 handfuls of sherds. 2 figurine frags. which I have placed in sherd bag. One small frag. of marble slab which I have placed on tile stack. No other finds. This was like a stratum of debris.
Removed over a week ago, S. Bldg. Page 2896 room 3, center, s. end under pavement block 2833-4, like 2833-3, but without stones, that is none larger than walnut size. No tiles. 11 sherds only. No other finds. All was clearly fill.
Mr. Hill continued to restore east wall facing w. portico of room 2, SE Bldg. We found that the cornice over the n. niche is off center. It is too far north for the niche below. The lateral position of the s. side of the niche is determined by the first tie piece in the door jamb. It is impossible to set the cornice further south as the stone restored to its original position in the wall between the door jamb above the tie piece and the Page 2898 cornice is squeezed in tight between the jamb and the cornice. The sill was placed by us very probably too far south. Presumably this lay either directly below the niche or directly below the cornice. The cornice (lintel) over the … continues
