which I am throwing out. 5 small sherds only. 1 ter. pipe frag. which I am placing in shard bag. Small box wall plaster F 1903. Remove from here also block of door sill immediately west of n. jamb. To be placed back again in situ. Removed step immediately east of 2d threshold of room 2 of SE Bldg. and found under it 5 sherds - nondescript common ware which I am throwing out; also 2 frags. of wheelmade lamp F 1904 and head of nail F 1911. No other finds. 15 June 51. 5 men only. Yesterday Mr. Hill finished setting up n.w. pier of SE Bldg. court. He says he would have been better satisfied if he had shaved off back of new half column in 4th course for the better alignment of the ancient blocks on the w. face of the pier. The 4th course here projects too much westward.
Page 2860 N 16-22. 16 June 51. Removed SE Bldg. system, n. of bldg. (Trench 11) E 14-16. 2821-1, loose dark surface soil (part of it under our dump which we removed of course previous to digging) few stones only rough ones averaging egg to fist size; none larger than foot size but only very few of these. 8 sherds only. 9 tile frags. 1 frag. of terracotta brackets for hollow panelling of heated rooms in baths. 2 worked blocks, stone. Placing tiles, bracket and worked blocks in stack at E 14.20 N 20.20 on bedrock. From here came too F 1906 and coins F 1907-8. 18 June 51. A stone slab similar to that found in north "window" of room 2, SE Bldg. was found in south window. Both were covered with wall plaster F 1911 (see Film 157-24). The one in n. "window" was covered with painted plaster to have no other possible purpose than to serve as back wall of a niche if we consider the window to have been a niche and not a window. Mr. Hill now does. This explains the similar slab found in the north window. It was the position and dimensions of the s. niches from the ground window slab that betrayed its purpose. In the south jamb as will be made clear by the first tie piece in the restoration. The height of the s. niche has a weather line showing, or rather confirming the position where the slab stood. See Film 157-25.

19 June& 20 June. Removed from north niche room 2, SE Bldg. 2865-1, very loose reddish soil with great many rough stones, many more stones than soil, all fallen. No worked stones save slab which served as back of niche (see above) Film 157, nos. 31 & 32, and 24 (for slab). Rough stones average nearly foot size. None quite as large as bucket size. About 2 wheelbarrow loads. About 1/3 wheelbarrow load of roof tiles; most of which were found in upper part of stratum. Am stacking these at E 15.00 N 2.50 in SE Bldg. court. 1
Page 2874 About 1/8 bucket sherds. From here came also frags. painted wall plaster F 1911 (from stone slab that served as back of niche) and other frags. F 1921, 2 glass vase frags. F 1922, and iron frags. F 1923. Removed slab from s. niche. About 1/3 of this was found covered with undercoat of plaster. On west face and about 1/5 with final coat. No color has survived. See Film 157-37. Mr. Hill placing these in restored wall. Removed from south niche p. 2875-1 moderately compact reddish soil, a very few rough stones averaging approx. half foot size. About 1/2 bucket tiles which I am stacking at E 12 S 4. About 1/2 bucket sherds only, lamp frag. F 1925. Page 2878 iron box of painted wall plaster F 1926, stone egg F 1927, iron figurine F 1928, and statue F 1929. There is more fallen stuff at lower level but I am not stacking it. All this stratum is object 1929, and statue that once stood in niche F 1930. Moderate number of rough debris. Mr. Hill placing ... at level of 1931, lower level on which statue F 1930 lay. From bottom of stratum came also F 1931, lower part stone animal. 21 June 51. Removed same area (fallen s. niche) 2875-2, moderately compact brown soil, not reddish as 2875-1, that is it is on average less reddish but no clear stratification was noted. I am levelling off arbitrarily at level of Page 2884 F 1932. 8 tile stones averaging about double fist size. None larger than 3/4 foot size. About 1/2 bucket sherds. 1 figurine frag. only - in bag to be washed. About 1/8 bucket sherds and lamp frag. F 1952. No other finds.
